Investigators determined that Harold Rudick, 48, of Washington, was driving a truck for Salem-based May Trucking Co. when he pulled over on the shoulder on the freeway’s southbound lanes near Gold Hill to rest. He went from the driver’s seat to the cab’s sleeper compartment, but failed to engage the brake, police said. Then the truck rolled backward into the right lane of the freeway. A semi owned by Andrus Trucking of St. George, Utah, and driven by Ronald Dean Richardson, 37, of Medford, hit the rolling trailer at about 8 a.m. The crash smashed the cab of Richardson’s truck and scattered ceiling tiles across the freeway. Richardson, critically injured, was airlifted to Rogue Valley Medical Center. He remained in serious condition Thursday night, hospital officials said. Rudick was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated and released. Clean up at the crash site under the Gold Hill overpass took about eight and a half hours, transportation official said. Traffic detoured. around the crash via exit 40.
