Mail Tribune 100: Aug. 11, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 11, 1916 VISITING PYTHIANS GIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT LODGE HALL Visiting eastern officials of the Knights of Pythias, who are guests of Medford members of the order, will appear tonight at eight o'clock at the K. of P. hall in a brief program, to which the public is invited. Addresses will be delivered by Mon. E. C. Plummer of Bath, Me., Col. S. L. Lowry of Tampa, Florida, Hon. John P. Arbenz of Wheeling, W. Va., Senator J. E. Richardson of Baltimore and Colonel J. H. Beans of Wheeling. Solo numbers will be given by Miss Era Egerton, who was soloist at the Supreme Lodge in Portland last week. A stereoptican picture "The Story of Pythian Knighthood," illustrated by 100 views, will be given by George W. Penniman of Boston, secretary of the committee on education of the supreme lodge. The 12 members of the party are at Crater Lake today and upon their return this afternoon will visit the fruit packing plants in Medford. Mr. Penniman will obtain a number of views of the packing operations, to use in his lectures on the west during the coming season. Saturday morning the party will leave for San Francisco, Grand Canyon and other western scenic points. ASHLAND AND VICINITY A special committee will look after the welfare of the San Francisco business men who will pass through here in a body August 26. The visitors disclaim any intention of seeking entertainment en route, but will hold themselves in readiness to respond to courtesies should they be extended. From June 21 to July 24 the Southern Pacific operated 131 special troop trains, transporting 50,000 men, besides horses and equipment. The number of passenger and freight cars was 2,120. This expedition service was performed without a single accident. Owing to wholesale thefts of electric light bulbs in the parks, the appliances will be hereafter marked "b. P.," signifying a city ownership of the property. Clarence Tostevin, former grocery man here and now running a dairy farm near Oakland, Ore., has been here this week on a business mission.
