Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 18, 2005 Since You Asked Kittens succumbed at shelter I read your story about the high number of cats being brought into the Jackson County animal shelter. I was interested in the fate of the four kittens being cared for by Donna Patnesky, the shelter worker. How did they fare? — C.A., Ashland We’re sorry to report that there’s a sad ending to that story, C.A. Patnesky called to report that the last of the four kittens died last week. It’s not clear exactly what afflicted the tiny tiger cats who were brought in a box to the shelter on July 27. It would take extensive, expensive medical tests to determine the cause of death, she said. "They had an uphill fight from the start," said Patnesky. "I’m just relieved they didn’t wither and die out there on their own." Advertisement Patnesky and other local animal advocates remind readers that more than 3,500 unwanted cats are expected to be brought to the shelter this year. Of those, only about a quarter will be adopted. The rest will be euthanized. The best way to prevent such a loss of life is for people to spay or neuter their pets, advocates say.
