California man nabbed after high-speed motorcycle chase Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 5:58 PM Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 5:58 PM » Social News A motorcyclist led police on a chase on Interstate 5 at speeds of up to 100 mph Monday afternoon before he likely ran out of gas in Central Point. Police found and arrested Nicholas J. Abel, 24, of San Jose, Calif., at a Shell gas station, where he's suspected of stealing gasoline from a pump that had been fueling a motorhome, Oregon State Police said in a release. Abel's alleged run from the law began in California and crossed into Oregon at about 1:15 p.m., police said. An Oregon trooper attempted to pull over the motorcyclist near the border, but the rider continued at a high rate of speed. At milepost 3, the rider drove through the median and traveled north on the southbound lanes before troopers lost sight of him near the Siskiyou Summit. Troopers located the motorcyclist again near milepost 16, and the rider drove recklessly at speeds over 100 mph, police said. OSP stopped the pursuit after the motorcycle exited Interstate 5 into Medford. Minutes later, police located Abel at the gas station. Abel was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on multiple counts of felony attempt to elude and reckless driving. Abel will face charges in California, police said. He has no apparent criminal record in Oregon.
