Klamath Union keeps Crater winless CENTRAL POINT � A disastrous season got worse for the Crater Comets Friday at Dutch Meyer Stadium. Klamath Union capitalized on five turnovers and kept Crater winless on the season with a 28-7 triumph. The Comets entered the game without starting quarterback Derek Petersen, who was out with a shoulder injury. Sophomore D.J. Beatty replaced Petersen, but didn�t have much success, completing only six of 23 passes for 36 yards and four interceptions. To compound matters, the Comets� leading weapon, running back Dan Casey, was lost for the game with an injury during Crater�s first offensive series. And that was right after Pelican quarterback Jason Mortenson dashed 67 yards for a touchdown on KU�s first play of the game after receiving the opening kickoff. On Crater�s third play after falling behind 7-0, Beatty suffered his first interception. But the Pels couldn�t capitalize on the turnover. Crater drove to the KU 25 after gaining possession, but Brad Mejia picked off Beatty and returned the interception 53 yards for a touchdown, giving the Pels a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Near the end of the second quarter, Crater�s Chris Pettegrew recovered a fumble on the Klamath 49, and 10 plays later, Shane Lumpkin scored from 1 yard out with 25 seconds left before halftime. Crater fumbled on its third play after receiving the second-half kickoff. Again the Pels took advantage of the opportunity with a five-play, 32-yard scoring drive. Mike Mitchell�s second interception of the game led to KU�s final score in the fourth quarter. David Trujillo completed a 75-yard drive with a 31-yard touchdown run. Crater gained 160 yards on the ground, with Pettegrew leading the Comets rushing attack with 64 yards.
