COMEDY Paula Poundstone performs at the Craterian Paula Poundstone climbed aboard a Greyhound bus 25 years ago and traveled across the country from Boston to San Francisco, stopping to perform at open mic sessions at comedy clubs along the way. Finally settling in Los Angeles, she made her way to fame with a series of one-hour HBO comedy specials and her backstage commentary during the 1992 presidential election on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," and as a panelist on "Real Time With Bill Maher." She's now heard on NPR's wildly popular weekly news quiz show "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me," broadcast internationally on NPR Worldwide. A high-school dropout, Poundstone has become a great humorist, performing stand-up extensively in theaters and performing arts centers in large U.S. cities. She'll perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Tickets cost $27, $30 or $33 and can be purchased online at craterian.org, at the box office, 16 S. Bartlett St., or by calling 541-779-3000. Fellow comedian Bob Zany wrote in the Boston Globen that “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.” Some audience members put it less elegantly: “I peed my pants laughing.” Spontaneity is everything, and is probably what separates Poundstone from the pack of comics working today. “No two shows I do are the same," she says in a press release. "It's not that I don't repeat material. I do. My shows, when they're good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then, someone says, 'Tell that story you used to tell,' and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five.” Not only has Poundstone shot through the glass ceiling, she's never acknowledged one was there. Along with comedy specials on HBO and Bravo, she's won an Emmy, steps to the plate for causes she believes in, and is included in most surveys — be it film, television or print — noting comedic influences of the 20th and 21st centuries, most recently "We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy" (Sarah Crichton Books). She's the first woman to win the CableACE Award for Best Stand-up Comedy Special. In early 2013, Poundstone joined Joan Rivers, Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Griffin, Lily Tomlin and a slate of female comedians for a Showtime documentary, "Why We Laugh: Funny Women," narrated and produced by Rivers. The film is an uncensored look at the dedication, courage and passion required to succeed in a male-dominated industry. Poundstone often appeared on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," until Dec. 19, when Ferguson ended his nine-year run as the CBS show's host. Ferguson and Poundstone are among the regulars who perform at Beantown's Wilbur Theatre. Look for Ferguson's "Hot and Grumpy Tour: Walking the Earth" on Feb. 14 at the Wilbur. Poundstone's newest comedy CD, "I Heart Jokes: Paula Tells Them in Boston" was recorded during a performance at the Wilbur and was released on April Fool’s Day in 2013.
