On Wednesday afternoon, two men filled out credit applications at a major retailer in Medford. After presenting California driver’s licenses and major credit cards, both suspects were approved and then purchased an expensive diamond ring. The clerk and the manager were suspicious and tried to stall them until store security arrived, but the suspects took the ring and left the store. Employees got a license plate number from the suspects’ vehicle and then alerted other branches of their store. A short time later, the suspects entered the second store and attempted the same scam. They fled the store before store security or police could detain them. The suspects were also able to fraudulently apply for credit at a computer store, which they used to purchase a laptop computer. Medford police believe they may have applied for credit at other stores in our area. The vehicle registration returns to a white 2004 Ford Explorer with California plate 5CMK513. The car was rented from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Belmont, Calif., on Tuesday, by Hon Chung Lau, 29, of Oakland; and Larry Cheak Yan Sum, 34, of San Francisco. If you see these suspects or the rented vehicle, or have any information on additional fraud cases, call Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon at 800-3-DETECT (800-333-8328) and refer to case No. MT- 66. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in these cases or any unsolved criminal activity. Callers can remain anonymous.
