When City Hall is crowded Shady Cove considers renting, remodeling or building SHADY COVE -- The police department may find a new home as the City Council begins discussing options for relieving overcrowding at City Hall. "We're getting so cramped at town hall that we're entertaining the idea of perhaps moving the police department to another location," said Jerry L'Estrange, city administrator. The council on Thursday talked about these options: renting or leasing space from a builder; remodeling City Hall; putting up a building on city-owned property near the fire station; or trading with the fire department for property closer to Highway 62. The city's 13 employees work in 2,000 square feet of office space at Shady Cove City Hall, situated at 22451 Highway 62, near the elementary school. The police department, which is made up of a police chief, three officers and several reserves, occupies 860 square feet of that building. "This is just the exploratory stage," L'Estrange said of the council's discussion. In other action Thursday, the council: Approved the paving of a pathway that leads to the restrooms at Aunt Caroline's Park, at 2501 Indian Creek Road. Canceled the $100,000 resurface project planned for Erickson Street and initiated legal action against the two developers who owe $66,000 in system development charges. One developer who attended the council meeting told members that he didn't have the money to pay fees that he pledged at the time he started his building project. The city had to return grant money to the state as a result of canceling the Erickson project. "It's disappointing to have this loss happen and now we will be spending these funds on attorney fees instead of building streets," L'Estrange said.
