PREP SOFTBALL: Phoenix works quick to remain perfect Updated: Apr 24, 2021 07:54 PM A A TALENT — It wasn’t a very long day but it definitely was a satisfying one for the Phoenix softball team Saturday at Hagler-James Park. Phoenix needed a combined seven innings of play to sweep North Valley due to new mercy-rule protocols put in place this spring, with the Pirates prevailing 18-3 and 16-0. Games this year are halted after a 15-run lead has been generated through at least three innings of play, or 10 runs through at least five innings. Raelyssa Goff struck out three, walked two and allowed two hits in the three-inning opener, while Jayden Vos struck out five with two walks and one hit allowed in the four-inning nightcap for Phoenix (6-0). Kassandra Skaff combined to go 4-for-4 with five runs and three RBIs, with Josie Bolstad and Goff each supplying three-run triples in the second inning of Game 1. Vos went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI and Kendall Heywood 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI to highlight Game 2, with Bolstad 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and Lola Lumbreras 2-for-2 with one run. SHELDON 9-16, NORTH MEDFORD 5-4: At Eugene, North Medford flexed its muscle with three home runs in the opener, but the Black Tornardo couldn’t keep pace with Sheldon’s offense in a doubleheader sweep. Matlyn Leetch hit a pair of solo home runs as part of a 4-for-4 day with three runs scored in Game 1. Sara Hamlin also hit a solo homer in the opener. But the bats for Sheldon (7-0) proved to be too much, recording 29 hits in the doubleheader. The Irish hit six doubles and three home runs — two from Kinley Pappas and one off the bat of Natalie Plough — on the day. Shahar Miles went 4-for-7 with three RBIs in the two games for North (4-2). ROSEBURG 4-9, GRANTS PASS 3-13: At Roseburg, Alexa Medley went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs and Grants Pass got three hits and two RBIs from Ellie Berg and Sara Martin in the nightcap to salvage a split in the doubleheader. Taylor Douglas also went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI to boost the Cavers (4-2) in Game 2, while Haleigh Wambolt supplied a three-run home run for Roseburg (4-3). Roseburg erased a 3-1 deficit in the opener with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Shyla Mead. Kami Gibson also had a solo home run in the second inning. Medley had three hits in Game 1 for GP, with Sophie Woodburn and Martin each driving in a run.
