GIRLS HOOPS: Ashland claims first win of season By Danny Penza Updated: Dec 16, 2022 11:13 PM A A 10 View all photos Ashland girls basketball coach Antione Perry would probably be the first one to tell you his Grizzlies didn’t exactly start out all that well offensively against St. Mary’s on Friday night. But the thing that got the Grizzlies going? Their defense. Shaking off a tough start where points were hard to come by, Ashland was able to right the ship and build a double-digit lead going into halftime on its way to a 49-28 win over Class 3A St. Mary’s at the Crusaders’ gym. “At the very start, we played a little sluggish and were slow to start the game,” said Perry. “But we got into a rhythm and were making good decisions and getting some steals, some fastbreaks. We were moving the ball well on offense and playing some good defense on (Maddie) Ward since she started the game hot.” Ward scored the Crusaders’ first eight points of the game, but it was the resolve of the Grizzlies (1-2) that led to them limiting St. Mary’s (0-2) to three points the rest of the first half. Behind the defensive change, Ashland was able to get out more in transition because of it and that led to easier baskets. Koura Sayre gave the Grizzlies their first double-digit lead of the night in the second quarter with a corner 3-pointer to make it 21-11. Ashland limited St. Mary’s to just one point in the second quarter and led 26-11 going into the half. Grizzlies guard Abbey Lambert finished with a game-high 19 points to go with four rebounds and a pair of steals. Lola Poujol Vara also finished in double figures with 10 points, while Loane Adaine had five points, six rebounds and four steals. “She was getting some steals and was able to get out on the break,” Perry said of Lambert, a senior. “We had some nice passing on offense where we were spreading things out and that was allowing her to drive to the basket.” Ward finished with 17 points for the Crusaders, who were playing their first game since a Dec. 2 loss to Phoenix. Ashland was coming off a pair of losses to open the season against teams from the Southwest Conference in Roseburg and North Medford. “Always nice to get the first win,” Perry said with a laugh. “You never think it’s going to come eventually, but it’s always nice to get it.” ASHLAND (49): Montgomery 4, Sayre 5, Lambert 19, Carter 6, Vara 10, Jarvis 0, Adaine 5, Losinski 0. SOUTH MEDFORD 68, CORVALLIS 52: At Corvallis, South Medford freshman Taylor Young enjoyed a big night with 25 points, seven steals and five assists to help give the Panthers a boost in their first game back since finishing runner-up at the Nike Iolani Classic in Hawaii. South senior Donovyn Hunter, battling an illness that is going through the program, contributed 21 points and six steals in playing about half the game for the Panthers (5-1). Fellow senior starter Kendall Fealey and freshman Jordan Barlow didn’t make the trip after also being sick. Kim Ceron had 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks to deny Corvallis (2-1), which got 14 points from Marlee Hammer. SOUTH MEDFORD (68): Richardson 0, Taulani 1, Hunter 21, Young 25, S. CRATER 84, HENLEY 50: At Klamath Falls, sophomore Sage Winslow amassed a career-high 33 points to power Crater to its highest point total of the season. Winslow also tallied three 3-pointers and four steals for the Comets (3-4), who began the third quarter on a 12-0 run, leading to a season-high 30-point period. The Comets also received 10 points from sophomore Lydia Traore, eight from junior Samantha Gish and seven from sophomore Addison Dippel. Sage’s junior sister Abigail Winslow scored six points to go with six rebounds and six assists. Henley’s record dropped to 3-4 overall. CRATER (84): Gugliotta 6, S. PHOENIX 47, DOUGLAS 43: At Phoenix, senior Morgan James flirted with a triple-double for the second straight night, recording 10 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals while helping Phoenix overcome a big fourth-quarter run from Douglas. The Trojans (2-3) knocked down a 3-pointer with about 20 seconds remaining to cut the Pirates’ lead to 46-43. With eight seconds on the clock, junior Anabell Delgado was fouled and hit a free throw to give the Pirates (5-3) a two-score lead and preserve the win. Delgado poured in 16 points and drained five of Phoenix’s seven 3-pointers. A few of her treys came during pivitol moments in the contest to slow the Trojans’ momentum. In her second varsity start, sophomore Mae Woodward dropped in a career-high 10 points for Phoenix, which led 30-14 at halftime.
