Spartans fade after fast start against Fresno Jan 11, 2014 12:00 AM A A A goal frenzy out of the gates for the Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team fizzled as quickly as it began, then two late goals by Fresno's Filip Winkler finished the Monsters' 6-4 victory Friday in the first of a three-game series at The RRRink. Winkler broke a 4-all score with the go-ahead goal for the Monsters (21-4) midway through the third period and completed his hat trick on an empty net goal with less than one minute to play. In the opening 12 minutes, the Spartans (9-17) burst out to a 3-1 lead with goals by Douglas Gutierrez, Nick Beaune and Austin Sartorius. After that, the Spartans' offense fell flat, making way for the Monsters to take a 4-3 lead two minutes into the third period. Moments later, Carl Edstrom evened the score at 4 for the Spartans before Winkler's takeover. Fresno Monsters 2 1 3 — 6 Southern Oregon Spartans 3 0 1 — 4
