COLLEGE FOOTBALL Marshall stays with Ducks to get better Comment By Ryan Thorburn The Associated Press MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn The Associated Press Posted Apr. 20, 2015 at 7:54 PM Updated Apr 20, 2015 at 7:55 PM By Ryan Thorburn The Associated Press Posted Apr. 20, 2015 at 7:54 PM Updated Apr 20, 2015 at 7:55 PM » Social News This Marshall plan is a patient one. There were plenty of reasons for Byron Marshall to leave Oregon a year early to cash in his diverse NFL draft portfolio. The Ducks have to replace a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. The roster is in good hands with younger skill players. And Marshall has already shown off his versatility by following up a 1,000-yard rushing season in 2013 with a 1,000-yard receiving season in 2014. After carefully weighing his options, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound senior-to-be decided it would be best to get a little stronger and faster in Jim Radcliffe’s strength and conditioning program and more technically sound running routes and catching passes under the tutelage of wide receivers coach Matt Lubick. “I wanted to get more experience, more prepared,” Marshall explained. “I felt like I could get better in every area.” Marshall was Oregon’s top returning running back last spring after rushing for 1,038 yards and 14 touchdowns his sophomore season. After the graduation of Josh Huff and a season-ending knee injury to Bralon Addison, the coaching staff decided to try Marshall at wide receiver. He led the Ducks with 74 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns last year. “That’s something amazing,” Addison said of Marshall’s ability to dominate at running back or receiver at college football’s highest level. “Byron is such and amazing player and one of my best friends on the team. Byron is a guy you could put anywhere. If they wanted to put him at corner they could.” Marshall isn’t switching over to defense to help John Neal in the secondary, but Charles Nelson is. That speaks to the depth Oregon has accrued at running back and receiver. Royce Freeman (1,392 yards, 18 touchdowns last season) and Thomas Tyner (586 yards, five touchdowns), should be one of the nation’s top running back tandems this fall. And the player everyone is raving about this spring is redshirt freshman Tony Brooks-James. “Tony looks good. He’s fast, one of the fastest backs that we have, real agile,” said Marshall, who also rushed for 395 yards last season. “He’ll see a crease and just hit it and take off. Tony has probably had about 10 70-yard touchdowns during this spring.” Addison is healthy a year removed from a torn ACL, but Marshall’s help is still needed most at receiver. Devon Allen (684 yards, seven touchdowns) is recovering from an ACL tear, and Darren Carrington (704 yards, four touchdowns) is facing a suspension from the NCAA for a failed drug test. “We have a lot more depth than we’ve had here in a long time,” Lubick said. “Developing leadership is a key thing that we’re looking for through spring ball.” Marshall is looking forward to playing alongside classmates Addison and Dwayne Stanford (639 yards, six touchdowns), who are both redshirt juniors, and mentoring freshmen Jalen Brown and Alex Ofodile. “It just makes you play harder and give other guys an example to go off of, and obviously just coach them up as you’re out there,” Marshall said of being a senior in a program that graduated some all-time leaders in Marcus Mariota, Hroniss Grasu and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. “I try to get everyone going as a leader and just play harder so people can mimic your behavior.” Marshall hopes to follow in the footsteps of players like Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles and even former Oregon teammate De’Anthony Thomas who can have an effect on NFL games as a running back, receiver or kick returner. It’s a sensible plan. “The league is changing,” Marshall said. “It’s not just straight running backs anymore and a lot of receivers need to be stronger. Just to be able to do both roles will definitely help me out.” By Ryan Thorburn The Associated Press MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn The Associated Press Posted Apr. 20, 2015 at 7:54 PM Updated Apr 20, 2015 at 7:55 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Football Outlook for Seahawks Stars Apr. 22, 2015 at 3:05 am 2015 Fantasy Outlook for Chargers' Stars Apr. 17, 2015 at 6:15 am Fantasy Outlook for Dolphins Stars Apr. 14, 2015 at 6:37 am Biggest Fantasy Winners, Losers in Free Agency Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:45 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Bears Stars Apr. 7, 2015 at 1:09 am RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
