Mike Moran has been appointed the temporary head of the city's police department. He will take the job Aug. 4, after Chief Bob Rector leaves July 31 to work for the Curry County Sheriff's Department. Moran retired from Medford in 2006, narrowly lost an election for state representative and worked as a real estate agent, but found he wasn't ready to give up police work. "I missed the business," he said. "And real estate was not the growth industry I thought it would be," he added with a chuckle. He did background investigations for Medford police and worked as an instructor at the state Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. An eight-year member of the Medford School Board, he resigned from that position in June, saying his other work was forcing him to miss too many meetings. When Moran heard Rector was leaving Talent, he jumped to send in his application for the temporary post. He said Talent is a nice town with a good police department. It's also the place he started his police career. At 21, directly after college, he served as a reserve officer under Talent police Chief Chuck Roberts before becoming an officer in Medford in 1977. Under state Public Employees Retirement System rules, police retirees can work full-time for cities with fewer than 15,000 residents or counties with fewer than 75,000 residents without triggering a limit on the number of hours they can work each year and still receive retirement checks. The city's announcement of Moran's hiring noted that officials wanted a temporary police chief in place when its new city manager, Jay Henry, arrives. The plan is to give Henry time to get his bearings, then launch the search for a police chief. Reach reporter Anita Burke at 776-4485, or e-mail [email protected].
