Community meeting Sunday on Mill and Mountain fires By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Sep 03, 2022 06:57 PM A A Photo courtesy Cal Fire Siskiyou Unit A community meeting about the Mill and Mountain fires in Siskiyou County, California, will held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Big Springs Elementary School, 7405 Highway A-12, Montague. Cal Fire officials will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about the fires, according to a post Saturday evening from Cal Fire Siskiyou Unit. The meeting will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/CALFIRESKU on the Cal Fire Siskiyou Unit Facebook page , technology permitting, the post said. The Mountain Fire burning near Gazelle had burned 3,395 acres as of Saturday and was only 5% contained, according to Cal Fire. The fire was moving north Saturday after an active night, burning through timber along Gazelle-Callahan Road, according to Cal Fire. The town of Gazelle was under evacuation orders Saturday. The Mill Fire was estimated Saturday at 3,921 acres and 20% containment. The fire started shortly before 1 p.m. Friday just north of Weed, California, about 65 miles south of Ashland. The flames raced into the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, where a significant number of homes burned and residents had to flee for their lives. The fire then continued north and entered Lake Shastina. Two people were sent to Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta. One was in stable condition and the other was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center, which has a burn unit. An evacuation center was set up at the Karuk Tribal Wellness Center, 1403 Kahtishraam, Yreka, according to Briana Haberman, public information officer for Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services.
