The Ashland volleyball team rallied to deal Crater another agonizing Midwestern League loss Tuesday, 26-28, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12. Exactly four weeks after overcoming a two-set deficit to beat the Comets in Central Point, Ashland overcame a two-sets-to-one deficit to prevail. The win was Ashland’s seventh in eight matches and improved the Grizzlies to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the Midwestern. Crater fell to 9-6 and 4-4. “It was a battle tonight,” Ashland coach Robin Akpan said. “It went back and forth on every point, and in the fifth set we had a couple big swings from our outside hitter, Olivia Rooney, that put us one and two points up on them. So we had a little breathing room from there.” Rooney, a senior outside hitter, had 13 kills and 27 digs, sophomore middle blocker Alex Crane had 11 kills and two blocks and senior setter Karlie Richardson had 35 assists and seven digs. Also for the Grizzlies, junior libero Myla Norvell had 24 digs and senior right side Ellie Case had 13 kills and seven blocks. Destiny Fahndrich led Crater with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Nicole Morse added 11 kills and 21 digs and Cassidy Layton 20 digs and 40 assists. SOUTH EUGENE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: South Eugene captured the SWC road match in straight sets, 25-10, 25-18, 26-24. Freshman setter Maliah Ratcliff excelled for South Medford with 11 assists, seven digs and four aces. The Panthers (0-11, 0-9 SWC) received 10 digs and four aces from Alyssa Vaughn, who was 100 percent serving. Middle Chanel Groom provided six kills and one block, while libero Clara Garske added eight digs and was solid on serve receive. NORTH MEDFORD 3, WILLAMETTE 1: At Eugene, Alex Barry had a strong all-around match to spark North Medford to a 25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17 Southwest Conference victory. Barry, a sophomore setter, had 15 assists, 10 aces and 11 digs. Emily Carter led the team in kills (11) and digs (16) and served four aces. Adriane McLemore added eight kills and two blocks and Kiley Pauck provided five kills and two blocks for the Black Tornado (9-9, 6-3 SWC). THURSTON 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Grants Pass, Thurston won the Southwest Conference match, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11. Grants Pass dropped to 4-11 overall, 1-8 in league. KLAMATH UNION 3, PHOENIX 0: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix’s Lyzett Gutierrez had 23 digs and Lindsey Burns five kills as Klamath Union won the Skyline Conference match, 25-18, 25-16, 25-18. The Pirates dropped to 3-11 overall, 0-6 in league. The Pelicans 8-7 and 2-5. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: Freshman outside hitter Caroline McMahon paced Cascade Christian to its 13th straight victory with a 25-4, 25-13, 25-7 Southern Cascade League home triumph. Allison Winter recorded 11 aces and began the third set for the Challengers (13-1, 5-0 SCL) with a nine-point service run, including seven aces. Ellie Brown had seven kills in nine swings against Rogue River (0-13, 0-5). BUTTE FALLS 3, PROSPECT 2: At Butte Falls, senior middle Raleigh Weaver had 24 kills, including the match-clincher, and eight digs as Butte Falls won, 14-25, 26-24, 25-11, 24-26, 15-13, in Mountain Valley League action. T’Neal Meyers registered 33 percent hitting with nine digs for the Loggers (8-4, 4-2 MVL), who served 88 percent as a team. Prospect dropped to 9-7, 3-3 in league.
