Mail Tribune 100, Oct. 1, 1915 The following news item was drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago. Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 1, 1915 Editorial: HYPHENS ADVOCATING DISLOYALTY The attitude of some hyphenated Americans toward the land of their adoption is set forth by the "Fatherland: the official organ of the German-Americans," as follows: The New York Times is tremendously excited over the possibility that some of our German-American citizens would not enlist in the armies of the United States if the administration declares war upon Germany. We do not fear to declare ourselves. We would not enlist, and five million stalwart German-Americans would not enlist to slaughter their own kind at the behest of the cruelest plutocracy the world has ever seen. The "Fatherland" is one of the papers subsidized by the kaiser to stir up trouble in the United States by creating disloyalty to the government. Despite its pretensions, it does not voice the sentiment of the great majority of foreign-born who fled from tyranny at home to liberty abroad. The great trouble with the foreign born, like the editor of the Fatherland, whose umbilical cord binding them to medieval monarchy has never been severed, is that they mistake their newly found liberty for license. Gagged, repressed and regulated to death in their native land, absence of tyrannical restraint causes them to run wild in the United States and rankly abuse their recently acquired freedom of press and speech. If any German criticizes the kaiser or his government in the German press, he is imprisoned and the publication suppressed. Were any foreigner to publish a paper, like the Fatherland, devoted not only to abuse of the government, but the open advocacy and propagation of disloyalty in the interest of a foreign nation, he would be shot without ceremony as a traitor. Personal liberty is a priceless blessing of democracy, yet its value is so little comprehended and it is viewed with such contempt by feudal militarism that we see foreign tyrants making use of it, through their envoys, to stir up dissension and disloyalty in friendly nations. There has recently been launched by these so-called German-American organizations, whose sole use of their American citizenship is to advance the interests of a foreign ruler, a nation-wide movement to coerce Congress and punish a president of the United States for his foreign policy. German-Americans are being instructed to vote solidly against congressmen who support the administration, and threats are made of a solid German vote against the president at the next national election to accomplish his defeat.
