Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 9, 2006 Washington man bids $120,000 for Oregon bighorn sheep tag Outdoor Notes By MARK FREEMAN Mail Tribune A Washington man who owns a chain of appliance stores bid the second-highest amount ever for an Oregon bighorn sheep tag auctioned to help fund sheep management here. John Amistoso, 51, of Deer Park, Wash., paid $120,000 for the tag during Saturday’s Foundation for North American Wild Sheep convention in Reno. The tag is less than the record $130,000 paid last year by Dan Smith of San Jose, Calif. Amistoso, who owns Fred’s Appliance stores, also paid a record $180,000 for Idaho’s sheep tag in a FNAWS auction last year. The auction program is the way many western states and Canadian provinces fund bighorn sheep management in their states. Advertisement Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife receives 90 percent of the auction price for the Oregon tag, ODFW spokeswoman Ann Snyder said. FNAWS keeps 10 percent to cover advertising and auction costs as well as for helping fund foundation grants, some of which also help fund Oregon projects, Snyder said. Amistoso did not return telephone calls seeking comment. Sheep hunting in Wyoming and elk hunting in northeastern Oregon will be the subject of a local hunters’ program set for tonight’s meeting of the Oregon Hunters Association’s Rogue Valley Chapter. As the featured part of the program, chapter member Noel Moore will show a video of his Wyoming and northeast Oregon hunting experiences on horseback. The chapter meets monthly at J.J. North’s Grand Buffet, 1016 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. The social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by an optional dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. Fly-fishing at Christmas Island will be the featured program when the Rogue Fly-Fishers Association meets Feb. 15 in Medford. The monthly meeting of the Medford-based association begins at 6 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 200 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. The meeting starts with social hour, followed by a buffet dinner and meeting that begin at 7 p.m. After the meeting, Ashland fly-fishing guide Ken Morrish will present a slide show on Fishing Christmas Island, which is in the Indian Ocean northwest of Australia.
