I recall a time when the party that lost the presidential election referred to itself as "the loyal opposition." Whatever happened to this concept? Look what has evolved in its place. Forty-seven Republican senators have written to a foreign leader advising that foreign leader that any negotiation with our president engaged under our Constitution can be made null and void when the current president, our commander and chief, leaves office. Is this an act of treason? Is undermining the the authority of our president to negotiate agreements with foreign nations an act of treason? The letter, signed by 47 United States senators, to the head of the leader of Iran that was designed to undermine the authority of the president of the United States is an act of treason! My voice may only be as significant as spit in the ocean, but this is still America, and it is my voice. Walter Schmidt, Jacksonville Commissioners failed The paper said the argument for the marijuana tax is that if it is passed before July, it would be grandfathered in and not rescinded by Measure 91. Why was this ballot sent out in March at a cost of $100,000, when there is an election scheduled for May? I would say that these county commissioners have failed their first fiduciary responsibility test. Michael Davis, Talent Stop export pipeline The Colorado gas industry complains U.S. consumption isn't keeping up with production, that they aren't getting rich enough fast enough so we must sign this deal with the devil and export our energy security to Asia, with no contingency for stopping the flow once it starts. Who decides when we have exported enough? The industry? The federal government announced recently that we have enough gas to export and meet the needs of the U.S through 2040, only 25 years. Petroleum industry analysts are asking, "do we have enough gas to even consider export"? We are denied any broad national discussion on energy export policy; consideration for the future or facts impede progress, don't you know, so senators introduce "fast track" legislation, the long-term interest of our nation is dismissed and the path is cleared for the wealthy to become so powerful they will no longer need to buy government, they will be the government. Maybe we will soon see the first U.S. trillionaire, won't that be exciting. Like a bully with a belt, "Big Money" stands behind the door making sure government officials are compliant, and that local television news reporters turn their heads while it happens. Overturn "Citizens United." Chris Mathas, Butte Falls Drought worsens In 2014, hundreds of Southern Oregon residents paid for water deliveries to simply continue living at home. With current record low snow packs, this year’s drought may be worse than last year’s. With increasing water scarcity and climate warming, should Senators Wyden and Merkley and U.S. Congressmen DeFazio and Walden be proposing to further degrade water supplies from BLM O&C watersheds by increasing logging 250 percent above current levels? Does anyone believe that legislation to dramatically increase logging via the removal of environmental safeguards will increase the natural regulation and availability of water supplies to 1.2 million Oregon residents? Also, the new gold rush of marijuana growers moving into southwest Oregon should be another great concern for rural residents who worry about or have experienced water shortfalls. A California study estimated that each marijuana plant is provided about 5 gallons of water a day. If growers are staying within legal limits, that may not be a problem. However, we all know there are growers who are cultivating 200-2,000 percent above their legal limit. Some of these growers are illegally pumping water out of creeks and rivers. Friendly advice: stay within legal limits or law enforcement may come knocking.
