After all, the people involved have only been working on that agreement for at least 25 years, that I am aware of, so why would corporate and party tool Walden want to do something that might cause his base to create a problem for him in his tireless search for more political power in the halls of the most dysfunctional Congress in at least the last 70 years (I wasn't around to witness the ones before 1946). I also remember how heartily the Muddy Tributary endorsed this clown during his last walk to office. When are the sadly underrepresented voters of Eastern and Southern Oregon going to wake up and cancel this man's ticket? Then he can go be a lobbyist, and devote all his time to screwing the working people of the United States, enriching his corporate owners and undoubtedly, himself at the same time. Ed Cooper Gold Hill Planet is warming I hope D.J. Fontana (Dec. 7) was paid handsomely by fossil fuel corporations for promoting their campaign of lies about climate change. While he is correct that Earth’s climate has always been changing, he is totally wrong in claiming that the current warming trend is just part of that process. In fact, if Mr. Fontana undertook minimal research, he would find out that the primary factor producing the multi-million year pattern of glacial and interglacial periods — the Milankovitch Cycle — is currently pushing us into another ice age. Meanwhile, solar irradiance has been declining since the mid-20th century. Contrary to Mr. Fontana's letter, the array of factors known to cause historic temperature trends is now conspiring to induce global cooling. Yet, despite what should be happening, the planet has been warming for over a century, and most dramatically since the 1970s. Those like Mr. Fontana, who simply deny that climate scientists really do understand what is happening or are actually correct in ascribing this to human emissions of gases, should consider their grandchildren. If they are wrong, and the climate scientists are correct, they will have destroyed their chance at a livable planet. Do they care for them so little? Trisha Vigil Talent Witness the frenzy Jesus Christ was born in a sheep stall, laid in a feed trough, the government (king) out to kill him. He never drove a car, nor went to college, never owned a house, or wrote a book, never was married or had kids, never broke the law, (man's or God's). Rejected and denied by his 12 friends. His religion yelling, crucify him. Finally dying slowly on a cross at 33. Yet despite continued attempts to erase this humble man's life and name from the earth, his popularity continues to soar, witnessed by the gift giving frenzy going on every year in celebration of his birth. Dave Hale Eagle Point Scab is peeled off Thanks to Donald Trump, the scab has been peeled off the philosophic malignancy sustained by the current slate of right-wing Republicans, and reveals the contemporary values of the Party of Lincoln: racism, ethnic hatred, economic elitism, hybridization of religion with politics, social Darwinism, science denial, knee-jerk militarism and a selective ignorance of history. It now rejects the humane record of American progressivism in favor of reactionary paranoia and the smug certainty of a fear-based medieval ideology. The contenders for the GOP’s nomination have turned to condemning Trump, but in reality, he has simply pandered to their common base more honestly, which is why he appears to be a straight-shooter who reflects the belief system of those whose support he seeks. His fellow travelers are scrambling to disavow him at the same time they continue to parrot what is fundamentally the same political viewpoint. They’re embarrassed that he has both exposed their game and played it with greater skill. It is past time for a temperate but loyal opposition to man up and reclaim a rational conservatism for the Republican Party. Its current leadership is subverting it, and its growing irrelevance is a tragedy for the nation and for reasonable political balance.
