The police responded to the home in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood just before 1 a.m., Sgt. Pete Simpson said. The homeowner had opened fire, killing an intruder as the other robbery suspects fled. The homeowner suffered an undisclosed injury and was taken to a Portland hospital. The homeowner was released before noon and was cooperating with detectives. Police have not said if they think the robbers knew the homeowner or if the place was targeted at random. Detectives are following leads, but have little information about the other suspects and have made no arrests, Simpson said. Police have yet to release the name of the intruder who died or the resident who fired the shot. The shooting comes three weeks after police said former NFL player Stanley Wilson II was shot by a homeowner while trying to enter a southwest Portland home. Wilson, who was found naked, has been arraigned on burglary and trespassing charges. A grand jury found homeowner Robert McCall justified in his use of force against Wilson. Oregon law allows a person to use deadly physical force against someone trying to burglarize the person's home. The neighborhood where Thursday's shooting occurred is one of Portland's most affordable. Though it has something of a reputation for crime, people who live there say it's generally safe. "Like most neighborhoods we have good and bad," Connie Dubanski told KOIN-TV.
