Lake Oswego sails past Black Tornado By TED BURNHAM for the Mail Tribune Lake Oswego beat North Medford, 90-73, and grabbed the third-place trophy on Saturday night, but the game was something of a win for both teams as they finished the 12th annual Abby's Holiday Classic. The Lakers (9-1) bounced back from Friday's 69-56 loss to South Medford - the team's first setback of the season - while the Tornado played some of its best hoops so far against one of Oregon's best teams. Down by 13 points early on, North (3-6) battled back through the second and third quarters, pulling to within five points late in the second quarter and even leading for a few seconds midway through the third quarter. But the Lakers cemented the win late in the second half, outscoring North, 23-2, during five miserable minutes late in the contest. "Tonight, I thought that we played the basketball we are capable of for a longer duration," Lake Oswego head coach Mark Shoff said. "We really kept pushing the ball up the court and trying to be in the right place at the right time." Similarly, Tim Sam, the North coach, could find little to be disappointed about. "We would have had to play perfect to beat them tonight, and we played pretty close to that," he said. "It was the first four minutes of the fourth quarter that got us. But we are learning to get through it. We are getting more consistent." Lake Oswego shot 54 percent from the field and outrebounded North, 40-29. Junior wing Michael White led the Lakers with 24 points - nearly all in the first half - while 6-foot-9 Laker post Ben Sullivan had 20 points and eight rebounds - nearly all in the second half. Sophomore post Ryan Lucas led North with 18 points, and Beau Hovland had 11 points off the bench. Senior post Gabe Burchfiel had nine points and Brian Weeks added eight for the Tornado. The Lakers jumped out to a 29-16 lead early in the second quarter, thanks to impeccable shooting by White, who had 13 points in the first quarter, and baskets by senior wing Justin Joselow and junior point guard Aaron Collins. North went on a 24-point scoring binge in the second quarter, narrowing the margin to five points several times. Burchfiel, Weeks and senior guard Zach Rettmann had most of the points and key rebounds for North during the second quarter. Lakers fouls also sent Tornado players to the line four times in four minutes. Down 48-40 at halftime, Lucas scored eight points in two minutes - including two 3-pointers - to help North storm back in the opening minutes of the third quarter. In fact, the Tornado led, 52-51, for a few seconds. The Lakers answered with a 20-5 run to close out the third quarter and the streak continued into the fourth quarter, which was characterized by scrappy play by players off both benches. "I was really happy with our team play," the Lakers' Sullivan said. "We were disappointed with the loss to South (Medford), and I was worried about how we would play, so I am glad we responded to the challenge."
