Newspaper wins 10 SPJ awards The Mail Tribune won 10 awards for its reporting, writing, design and photography in the 2002 Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism Competition. The awards are sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists Region 10, covering media in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Alaska. The Grants Pass Daily Courier and KDRV Channel 12 also won awards. The Mail Tribune competed with newspapers with circulations of 25,000 to 50,000. The winners are: Dani Dodge Medlin, first place in government reporting for her entry "Thinking Twice About Deregulation." Mark Dodge Medlin, second place in news page design. Mark Freeman, second place in sports columns. Bob Pennell, second place in feature photography for "Independence Day." Tim Trower, second place in sports features for "One coach's battle." Bill Varble, second place in arts coverage for "Drawing a line." Jim Craven, honorable mention in sports photography for "Acrobatics in a tiny boat." Gary Nelson, honorable mention in editorial writing. Bob Pennell, honorable mention in feature photography for "Chino & Falstaff." Tim Pyle, honorable mention in sports reporting for "South tops Ashland." In the category for newspapers with less than 25,000 circulation, the Grants Pass Daily Courier was honored with several awards: honorable mention in social issues for Bartie Lancaster and Susan Goracke, "Amigos"; third place in spot news reporting for Shaun Hall and Patricia Snyder, "Christines take kids and kidnap possibility"; honorable mention in health reporting for Lancaster, "My name is Stacy and I have HIV"; first place in lifestyles reporting for Greg Hanberg, Snyder and Amanda Haines, "Singles file"; second place in arts coverage for Barbara Bailey, "Art born in abuse"; third place in business reporting for Lancaster, "Phone biz not calling back." KDRV Channel 12 won several awards for stations in its market size: first and second place in breaking news, third place in general news, second place in documentary reporting, third place in health and science reporting and first place in business, economic and consumer affairs reporting.
