U.S. District Judge Owen Panner sentenced John Charles Saubert on Jan. 7 to 15 months in prison after Saubert pleaded guilty to forcibly resisting or impeding a federal officer. National Park Service law enforcement rangers had arrested Saubert on Sept. 23, 2014, after being called to the employee dorms for a report of a disorderly subject. According to a criminal complaint, Saubert had been fired from his concessions job earlier that day for alcohol- and performance-related problems and was intoxicated. Rangers agreed to let Saubert stay in the dorms for the night if he behaved, but wrote that he was out of his room creating a nuisance within minutes. When rangers attempted to arrest Saubert for public intoxication, he allegedly broke free from their grasp, striking one in the face and knocking another into his patrol vehicle, the complaint says. He was initially charged with "interfering with an agency function" — a federal misdemeanor — and scheduled for a change of plea hearing Oct. 1, but he never showed up for court. According to a sentencing memorandum, the U.S. Marshals Service tracked him to the Amangiri resort in Canyon Point, Utah, where he had fled and was working as a chef. After Saubert was extradited to Oregon, a grand jury indicted him on the felony charge. Reach reporter Thomas Moriarty at [email protected] .
