Brookins, Joy honored by SCL By TIM PYLE Mail Tribune As befitting co-champions, the Cascade Christian and St. Mary's volleyball teams each placed three players on the all-Southern Cascade League first team. Taking their sharing a step further, the Challengers and Crusaders also split the player- and coach-of-the-year awards, with Cascade Christian senior setter Whitney Brookins voted the player and James Joy of St. Mary's named the coach. Joining Brookins as Challengers on the first team are senior outside hitter Krystal Holtz and senior middle Kristen Salamone. The first-team Crusaders are junior outside hitter Libby Trum, sophomore outside hitter Chrissy Seus and junior middle Christina Vaninetti. Senior outside hitter Marla Chappell of Chiloquin rounds out the first team. Brookins, a rarity as a setter who stands 5 foot 10, led Cascade Christian to a 23-6 overall record and a co-SCL crown. Joy said it was her crafty and precise distribution of the ball to Challenger hitters that helped make Cascade Christian so tough. "Whitney did a good job of not focusing on one hitter," said Joy, whose St. Mary's program had its 68-match SCL winning streak snapped by Brookins and the Challengers on Oct. 2. "She mixed it around and made us play honest. "What made her most valuable was she made her teammates better by keeping the other team off-balance." Despite having no seniors with previous varsity experience on his roster and just two overall, Joy guided the Crusaders to the co-title and third place at the Class 2A state tournament. The coach-of-the-year honor is Joy's fifth in five seasons at St. Mary's, and his team has had at least a share of the SCL crown every year. "People had been talking all year about 'rebuild,'" Joy said. "For the kids to do so well, it was pretty nice. ... They ended up playing great ball up at the state tournament."
