Paul was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on January 28th, 1910, to George Wesley Kerth, and Bertha (Marshall) Kerth. George, a train engineer, was killed in a train accident 2 years later. Bertha would end up remarrying, taking Paul and his older brother Gussie (Augustus) to merge into the family of Sam Reeves. Sam had also lost his wife, leaving him with 4 young children – Dallas, Milo, Eula, & Maggie. Sam and Bertha had 7 more children of their own. Bethel, Esther, Bill, Ernest, Nan, Sam, and Sylvia. Paul moved to Jacksonville in 1933. He worked on a pickle farm and panned for gold in the Applegate, sometimes earning up to $5 a day. He was drafted into the U.S. Army with the 5th Engineers in England and Iceland until 1944. He become a carpenter, helping to build Camp White in White City, the Oroville Dam, and Calvary Church in Jacksonville. In 1946, Paul married Gladys (Coleman) Hughes, who was widowed with her with 3 children, Bruce, Vance, and Dolores. The Kerths soon had 4 children of their own, Larry, Pauline, George & Gerald. In 1978, Gladys passed away. Paul then married Thelma Misener, until she passed away in 1987. He spent his final years healthy, taking great joy in watching his grandkids play and run on the same property he had lived on for over 45 years. Paul is survived by his 2 step children and 4 children: Bruce Hughes (Gridley, Ca), Vance Hughes (Battlefield, WA), Larry Hughes (Medford, OR), Pauline Irwin (Medford, OR), George Kerth (Medford, OR), and Gerald Kerth (Jacksonville, OR), 16 grand-children and 20 great-grandchildren. . A public memorial service will be held at Calvary Church at 520 N 5th St, Jacksonville, OR on Saturday, August 1st, at 10 am. The family welcomes those who wish to help celebrate his life.
