Oregon State Police Lt. Bill Fugate said Wednesday that detectives have not yet determined the identity of the body, but are considering foul play. Detectives did not release details from the autopsy in order to protect the investigation, Fugate added. Fugate also said the body had been in the water for "some time." "I don't know if they can get fingerprints. They're having a hard time identifying it through dental," Fugate said. OSP is treating the death as foul play until it can be ruled out, Fugate said. OSP is also checking missing-person lists and using DNA from the body to search for potential matches. The body found Saturday was not visible from Illinois River Road because it was down an embankment. A Forest Service employee made the discovery while walking to the river. Forest Service law enforcement and Illinois Valley Fire Chief Dennis Hoke were first on the scene, about halfway between Six Mile Campground and the Swinging Bridge, a remote but popular destination during summer. A Josephine County Search and Rescue team recovered the body, and the investigation was taken over by Oregon State Police, according to Sheriff Dave Daniel. It was the second body found in a local river in as many days in Josephine County, after a man walking his dogs Friday found a body in the Rogue River west of Grants Pass. That body has since been identified as the remains of 26-year-old Corey Maleski, who had been missing and presumed drowned after his kayak apparently capsized Jan. 24.
