Child safety seat inspection finds installation problems Seventy child safety seats were inspected in White City Saturday, and none of them was installed properly, inspectors said. The main reason for the failure was that the straps weren't tight enough, said Glenn Adams, a certified child passenger safety technician and a firefighter for Jackson County Fire District 5. During the inspection clinic at the Big R store, 25 safety seats were distributed to low-income families at or below cost, or for free. Eight seats were given away free, nine for a $10 co-pay, and eight for the $35 cost. The county bought the seats. People received the new seats for various reasons -- the old seat was recalled or damaged, the child was too big for it, or it had an unknown history, Adams said. It's recommended that people not buy used seats, unless the buyer knows who had it before and knows that it wasn't in a car accident. Seats that have been in an accident, no matter what the impact, should be discarded immediately. Those helping out at the clinic were from the Medford Fire Department, Jackson County fire districts 3 and 5, the Jackson County sheriff's office, La Clinica de Valle and the Rogue Family Center.
