The wound is between Harthun’s index and middle fingers along the knuckles. “It’s pretty deep,” Steve Harthun said with a wince as he sat in the stands at McArthur Court watching Lake Oswego defeat Westview in a first-round game of the Class 6A state tournament. “I don’t know if he’s going to be able to shoot the ball or even dribble it with his right hand.” Second-ranked South Medford (24-3) was set to meet Grant (17-8) in a first-round game tonight at 8:15. Harthun, a three-year starter and a major-college recruit, is the Panthers’ second-leading scorer at 20 points per game. He’s by far the team’s best outside shooter with 56 3-point baskets in South Medford’s 27 games. Harthun cut his hand on a mirror at home, his father said. He was cleared to play by his doctor early today. “I know he’ll be able to endure the pain — the question is how effective he can be,” Steve Harthun said. The older Harthun said he told his son to drive the lane for short jumpers, use his floater shot that doesn’t require much hand strength and to go to his left hand when possible. Steve Harthun said his son broke a bone in his shooting hand several years ago and scored 49 points nine days later. “We’re just keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best,” Steve Harthun said.
