Five races affecting Jackson County will be contested in the general election, including three House seats. The number of candidates has swelled, in part, because two senior legislators will be absent from the race. Ashland Sen. Lenn Hannon resigned his 30-year seat to take a job on the state Parole Board. Medford Rep. Rob Patridge said he won’t seek re-election because of the stress that five special sessions and the longest general session in history placed on his family and job. Democratic Rep. Alan Bates of Ashland has decided to leave the House and run for Hannon’s Senate seat. Bates is opposed by Republican Jim Wright of Medford. The Senate seat is now being held temporarily by Medford City Councilman Sal Esquivel, who has decided to make a bid for Patridge’s House District 6 seat. Advertisement Esquivel will be opposed by teacher John Doty of Medford. Three Ashland residents are vying for the House seat now occupied by Bates. Political newcomer and Republican Joanna Lofaso will take on either Peter Buckley or Judy Uherbelau, who will run against each other in the Democratic primary on May 18. Jackson County Commissioner Sue Kupillas will run in the Democratic primary against businesswoman Sue Densmore. In the general election this November, the Democratic winner will run against former sheriff C.W. Smith. Incumbent Rep. Dennis Richardson of Central Point, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Richard Koopmans, a Sams Valley resident, for the District 4 seat. Incumbent Sen. Jason Atkinson of Jacksonville, a Republican, will run unopposed in November for District 2. Incumbent Rep. George Gilman of Medford will run unopposed for District 4.
