Gage Steven Miller, 22, of Florence pleaded guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to second-degree robbery for his role in the hold-up of an Eagle Point convenience store in September 2014. He will be taken to a state mental hospital to make sure he is stable, then will be turned over to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin his prison term. Defense attorney Paul Moser withdrew a notice that he intended to use an insanity defense, saying Friday that strategy was not likely to be successful. In September 2014, Miller and another man wore camouflage-colored, boxer-style underwear over their heads to disguise their identities while robbing the convenience store of cash. Eagle Point police were unable to determine the identities of the men until an Oregon State Police trooper stationed in Florence received an anonymous tip that provided specific details about the robbery that were not widely known. The tipster named Eagle Point resident Timothy Daniel Raybould, 23, as a suspect, according to an affidavit. After further investigation, the trooper learned the person providing the information was Miller. During an interview, Miller confessed that he was the second robber in the case. He accused Raybould of pointing the gun at the clerk and demanding cash, the affidavit said. The trooper was able to track down Raybould and arrest him, the affidavit said. Both Miller and Raybould are currently held in the Jackson County Jail — each on $250,000 bail. Raybould's case is still pending. His next court date is Aug. 3, according to court records. After Miller took part in the convenience-store robbery, he committed first-degree burglary of an occupied home and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in January 2015 in Lane County. He was found guilty except for insanity on those Lane County charges and was ordered to the Oregon State Hospital for treatment, according to court records from that county. The court ruled Miller was a danger to himself or others as a result of mental illness and was not suitable for release into the community. Miller was later sent from an Oregon State Hospital in Junction City to the Jackson County Jail, where he was lodged in November 2015 for the Eagle Point robbery. Moser said his client was beginning to suffer from mental illness at the time of the 2014 Eagle Point robbery and was likely having a full-blown schizophrenic episode during the 2015 Lane County incidents.
