Economists suggest that 95 percent of Oregonians would save money under the HCAO Act, and the study bill will provide details on what single-payer health care will cost as we move Oregon forward to provide health care as a human right to all. “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Martin Luther King Jr. Brenda Gould, Ashland Export Cuban cars Seeing all the vintage cars on the streets of Havana, and since it looks like our relationship with Cuba is about to resume, I think exporting and sale of their classic cars is a great idea for enterprising Cubans. I would imagine that classic car aficionados everywhere are watering at the mouth for these vehicles. Seems like a win-win situation: we get these wonderful old beauties, while they make enough money to buy themselves new ones! Judie Bunch, Talent Ban unvaccinated kids A recent outbreak of measles spread by an unvaccinated person at Disneyland has spread to multiple states in the West. This outbreak, exacerbated by the recent outbreak of chickenpox among children here in Ashland, simply highlights the irresponsibility, and frankly, the stupidity of parents who deny their children the protection of vaccinations that prevent childhood diseases. These parents do have the right by law to deny their children these protections, and I'm sure they consider the choices they make regarding the raising of their children to be no one's business but their own. But when those decisions put the health of others at risk, it becomes everyone's business. It is grossly irresponsible of them to send their children to school bearing the risk of exposing others to whatever disease they may harbor. The Ashland school administration has excluded children who have a disease or have been exposed and may carry a disease from attending classes. I encourage the district to go one step further and state that all students must show evidence that they have received all vaccinations or they may not attend Ashland schools. If this causes the inconvenience of having to home-school the children — too bad. Don Stone, Ashland Beware smoke screens Beware side issues and smoke screens. Simply put, this is what is happening: a private corporation wants to export a U.S. natural resource to at least one foreign country for profit. To do this they want U.S. government(s) to validate their taking of private and public lands to build an LNG pipeline through forests and under roads and rivers. This is not for the public good, like roads, and sewers; this is for one corporation's profit. If you are happy with that, then pay no more attention to the scheme.
