South coach Murphy wins 200th game CENTRAL POINT -- It's been a less than stellar season for three-time defending Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball champion South Medford, but Thursday was a milestone night for Panthers coach Dennis Murphy. With South's 61-54 upset win over Crater, Murphy notched his 200th career victory in his 11th season at South Medford. Brian Hickey made a major contribution to the South victory with a career-high 26 points. "There's no question he played the best game he's had all year," said Murphy. "He shot the ball confidently and got good results." The win wasn't easy for South. Crater held a 41-36 lead entering the final period, but the Panthers connected on 13-of-17 free throws in the quarter to help erase the deficit. "We stepped up on the defensive end," said Murphy. "We played harder and smarter. We played with a lot more poise." Hard-luck Crater played without leading scorer Matt Brown, who had to sit out because of a deep thigh bruise. The Comets returned point guard Jason Korthals, who missed the previous two games because of illness. Korthals scored 11 points, while Mike Jacobs had a team-high 17. Crater has lost three straight SOC games, but has been missing Korthals, Jacobs or Brown in all three defeats. ASHLAND 58, KLAMATH UNION (44) --At Klamath Falls, Ashland's man-to-man defense smothered Klamath Union in the second half as the Grizzlies came from behind to stifle the Pelicans and remain in the SOC playoff race. Klamath Union (3-14, 1-8 SOC) led 30-28 at the half but managed only 14 points over the final two periods. The Grizzlies (5-5 SOC) kept the lead in the fourth period by making 11 of 15 free throws. Sal Pippa, Kris Pavilionis and Jimmy Werbin each had 12 points to lead the Grizzlies. BUTTE FALLS 71, PAISLEY 64, OT -- At Butte Falls, freshman Nick Rodgers scored eight of the Loggers' 14 points in overtime as Butte Falls moved into sole possession of first place in the Skyline A League Southern Division. The Loggers (12-10, 8-2 Sky A) drained 65 percent of their shots from the field, including a 6-for-10 effort from behind the 3-point arc. Paisley (8-3 Sky A) dropped into a three-way tie for second place with North Lake (7-3 Sky A) and Brighton Academy (8-3 Sky A). Jeremy McKibbin led the Loggers with 17 points, while Travis Smeltz added 16 points and four steals. Rodgers finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Ashlee Giles barely missed a triple double for the Tornado with 10 points, 13 steals and nine rebounds. Jenny Close added 11 points for North Medford, which built a 15-0 lead after one period en route to its 10th win in 12 SOC games and its 17th win against five losses overall. ASHLAND 68, KLAMATH UNION 59 -- At Ashland, sophomore wing Hannah Seltzer posted a double-double with a versatile performance against taller Klamath Union. Seltzer and Jenny Pippa both scored 13 points to lead five Ashland players in double figures. Seltzer added 10 assists, eight rebounds and five steals. Ashland junior post Chelsea Morgan contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ashland (14-5, 11-1 SOC) led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter. Mark Williams (145) and Tyler McPhee (152) proved to be the only Phoenix wrestlers seeing mat action in both dual meets, with Williams earning two pins and McPhee gaining a technical fall and a 2-0 overtime win over Jason Trader of North Valley.
