Does your dance class wince at the thought of budget cuts? Do your Sunday coffee buddies believe no new tax is ever temporary? If so, the Mail Tribune wants to hear from you. On Feb. 3, Oregon voters will decide whether to repeal a temporary income-tax surcharge approved by the 2003 Legislature. Lawmakers are counting on about $800 million in higher taxes to balance the state’s $11.5 billion two-year budget. Advertisement But tax foes behind the ballot measure said voters already rejected new taxes resoundingly last year. Forces on both sides of the issue are lining up now. But as part the Mail Tribune’s coverage of the coming vote, we’d like to seek a wider view. We’re looking for existing groups — clubs, classes, informal gatherings — where people are willing to talk frankly about taxes. If you’ve got a bunch of willing friends, let us know. In exchange, the Mail Tribune will buy a round of whatever — donuts, mochas — to say thanks. The idea is to get more voices into stories on this crucial issue that affects us all. To participate, e-mail reporter JoNel Aleccia at [email protected] or call her at 776-4465. We’ll come out to talk — and to listen.
