The Challengers (7-6, 4-2 Dist. 5) suffered a huge setback in the 25th minute when senior standout Makenzie Hickman was lost for the contest with a severe concussion stemming from a hard collision that led to an ambulance being called on her behalf. Cascade Christian, already injury-riddled, played with 10 players thereafter. St. Mary’s (11-2-1, 7-0) opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a goal by senior MaryBeth Barnum off an assist by Ibixia Alvarez. The Challengers answered in the 10th on a direct kick slotted in by Emily Stephens. Three minutes after Hickman was led off the field, the Crusaders scored for a 2-1 halftime lead after a goal by Megan Michels off a through pass by Ellie Hough. Hough added second-half assists on goals by Sara Klott and Emily Elmore, who converted with a nice header. Sabrina Miller also scored on a header off Michels’ corner kick. LAKEVIEW 1, ROGUE RIVER 0 : At Lakeview, Lakeview improved to 5-4-2 overall and 3-4 in District 5 play with a narrow victory over Rogue River (4-6, 2-4 Dist. 5). SOUTH MEDFORD 1, WILLAMETTE 1 : South Medford senior Montana Logue pulled her team even at 1-all in the 20th minute on a goal off an assist by Renae Nisbet but the Panthers couldn’t capitalize on several ensuing opportunities to settle for a tie in Southwest Conference play. Willamette (6-5-2, 3-4-2 SWC) opened the scoring in the 13th minute off a scrum in the box following a corner kick. South Medford moved to 8-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in SWC play heading into Tuesday’s 7 p.m. home matchup against North Medford. SHELDON 5, NORTH MEDFORD 1 : At Eugene, Sheldon clinched its first conference title since 2009, scoring all of its goals in a 17-minute stretch of the second half for the SWC win. Savannah Bumgardner supplied North Medford (9-3-1, 7-2 SWC) with a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute on a nice 18-yard far-post effort following a throw-in by Michala Denn. An injury suffered by junior Meghan Cowan on a collision that sent her into the bleachers in the 58th minute led to a 15-minute delay, and the Black Tornado couldn’t regain momentum. Sheldon’s Jennifer Shelton tied the match shortly thereafter, then Taylor Carman scored the go-ahead goal for Sheldon off a feed from Emma Eddy in the 65th. Mary Jane Erving, Emily Wiltshire and Eddy tacked on insurance goals for the Irish. GRANTS PASS 1, THURSTON 1 : At Springfield, Sami Galli scored on an assist from Eva Moser in the 50th minute to give Grants Pass the initial lead in the SWC road contest. Thurston (0-7-4, 0-7-2 SWC) capitalized on an empty net to score the equalizer five minutes later. The Cavers (6-6-1, 5-4) had more possession and opportunities in the tie game. SPRINGFIELD 2, CRATER 1 : At Springfield, Crater senior Sydney Beck scored in the 18th minute off an assist by Marcela Southmayd but Springfield notched an equalizer in the 35th minute and pulled ahead for good with a goal in the 55th of the Midwestern League contest.
