Woman, baby still in hospital By JIM DAVIS ASHLAND -- An Ashland woman was in fair condition and her 7-month-old baby was listed in critical condition late Friday night after they were struck by a car while crossing Ashland Street Thursday. Celena Callison, 27, and her infant son Lairomy were in Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, a nursing supervisor said. The accident occurred about 8:36 p.m. Thursday in the 1900 block of Ashland Street outside the Goodtimes Family Food and Fun Center at 1951 Ashland Ave., said Ashland police Sgt. Rich Walsh. Callison, who lives on Clay Street, was pushing Lairomy in a stroller. Her 8-year-old son, James, was walking with her and they were heading for Goodtimes, Walsh said. The family was crossing the four lanes of Ashland Street between intersections and the 8-year-old had made it across, Walsh said. At the same time, Walter P. Hoffman, 79, of Ashland, was driving a 1995 Honda Accord west on Ashland Street, down the Clay Street overpass. The car struck Callison and the stroller. Walsh said Callison was crossing in an area without crosswalks or stop lights. "My understanding is that she was also wearing dark clothing, and that could be a factor in the accident," Walsh said. The baby and the mother were rushed to the Medford hospital; a passenger in Hoffman's car was also taken to the hospital for chest pains. Her condition was not available. No charges have been filed in the case, Walsh said. A Jackson County accident reconstruction team was investigating the case, and the team's findings likely won't be available until Monday. Walsh said Callison's 8-year-old son has been placed with a foster family. Callison suffers from cerebral palsy, which affects the motor behavior of the central nervous system, said Melodi Cunningham, a friend and Callison's apartment manager. "Even before this accident, she needed help," Cunningham said, "even though she wouldn't let anybody know that she needed help." In the accident, Callison suffered severe injuries to the back of her head, Cunningham said, and Lairomy was in the intensive care unit. "We're hoping for the best because little ones like this are known to come out of it," Cunningham said. Other than her children, Callison has no close relatives, Cunningham said.
