Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 16, 1915 Medford will celebrate the Fourth of July , according to a decision reached by the merchants at the regular monthly meeting held in the basement of the Christian church on Monday night. It is planned to be the biggest celebration of the nation's birthday ever held in southern Oregon, with a picnic and barbecue for all of Jackson county as the main features. Committees of members of the Merchants' association and Commercial club will be appointed at once and work on the plans begun. W.A. Gates, who for ten years was connected with the second largest mail order house in the world, spoke upon "Mail Order Houses" in the principal address of the evening, and showed the merchants how to meet their strongest competitor. George Wilson made a talk on "Pessimism," in which he said Medford was the best advertised city on the coast, but no one at home would believe this. He urged that all business men "perk up," and show more of the progressive spirit.   Fruit conditions in the Rogue River valley , as far as budding and blooming are concerned, are excellent, according to fruit Inspector Jack Aitken. The season is a normal one. The buds and the blooms are from 10 to 14 days behind last year, which, it will be remembered, was a disastrous one. It was upon March 24 last year that the heaviest frost fell. At that time most of the fruit was budded and in bloom, and felt the full brunt of Jack Frost's chilly advance. At the present time almonds and apricots are in full bloom. the Howells are well advanced, and will be in blossom in a week or ten days. The Bartletts are also well advanced. Both the Howells and the Bartletts will be in blossom before the peaches. The other fruit, including the apples, are in normal stages. Spraying for scale is in full swing throughout the valley this week. The acreage for loganberries is increasing daily, and according to Manager R.D. Hoke of the co-operative cannery, 1915 will see the canning of this fruit trebled. Oregon loganberries are in high demand in the east, and the demand cannot be satisfied.
