The wind blew hardest higher up. This morning, National Weather Service officials had recorded gusts of 105 mph on Squaw Peak south of Jacksonville in the Siskiyous. The Medford airport recorded gusts of 44 mph, while Ashland saw close to 40 mph. Buckhorn Springs southeast of Ashland off Highway 66 got up to 43 mph. But despite that, reports of fallen trees and downed power lines were sparse. "It wasn't too bad at all," said Erin Sawall, battalion chief at Medford Fire-Rescue, adding there was one report of a power line that fell into a backyard, but that Pacific Power crews were able to handle it without emergency responder assistance. It wasn't much different in the southern valley, according to officials with Jackson County Fire District 5 and Ashland Fire & Rescue. The Central Point and White City area was also quiet for emergency calls, Fire District No. 3 officials said. Pacific Power spokesman Tom Gauntt said no large-scale power outages were reported, and county Roads & Parks director John Vial said crews didn't have much debris to pick up in the way of fallen trees, something he says the department had been prepared for. "We anticipated a busy night with the weather forecast and the winds that were predicted," Vial said. A high wind warning remains in effect through 4 p.m. today. Meteorologist Misty Duncan said winds could gain a little strength later this morning into the early afternoon, but that speeds should not exceed what was recorded Wednesday night.
