The Vermont senator spoke at a rally in Springfield. He drew young supporters from the nearby University of Oregon in Eugene. Sanders said he's hoping for a high voter turnout in Oregon because that's when he tends to win. "On May 17 let us have a huge voter turnout. Let this great state go forward with the political revolution," Sanders said. Republican candidate John Kasich was holding town halls in Portland and Medford on Thursday. Oregon has 74 Democratic delegates and 28 Republican delegates up for grabs — small yet potentially crucial numbers for both parties in securing a nominee. After big losses earlier this week, Kasich and Sanders are hoping Oregon can help keep their campaigns alive. In Springfield, Sanders gave no sign that he was ready to surrender to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. He pointed out the primaries and caucuses he has won thus far. "We must not have a Republican in the White House. But I think the evidence is overwhelming, you are looking at the strongest Democratic candidate," he said. Sanders repeated campaign themes that align with the views of many Oregon progressives, such as correcting income inequality through higher taxes on the rich. Sanders was last in Oregon on March 25, when he spoke at a rally in Portland. During that visit, a bird stole the spotlight when it landed on Sanders' lectern. The photo of the bird and Sanders looking at each other went viral on social media.
