Mustangs split twin bill at Eugene EUGENE � Charlie Jensen belted a two-out grand slam in the first inning to lead the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team to a 7-5 opening game win over the Eugene Challengers. Eugene bounced back in the nightcap to shut out Medford, 4-0. Matt Skundrick gave up 11 hits over seven innings and found a way to escape danger in almost every inning for his seventh win of the season. Shamen Johnson led off the Eugene seventh with a solo blast, his 13th home run of the season, but Skundrick settled down to retire the Challengers. Johnson took the hill for Eugene in Game 2 and held the Mustangs in check, allowing seven hits while striking out seven. Brent Kircher went the distance, allowing only five hits and surrendering no earned runs. Dan Bruce went 5-for-6 over both games and has hit safely in 12 of his last 17 at-bats. Evan McArthur added two hits in the second game while Ken Halpin went 2-for-4 in Game 1. Medford dropped to 30-17 overall and 9-7 in Area 4 conference play with one week of regular season games remaining. Bandits edged the Royals at the Olympia (Wash.) Invitational 10-team wood bat tournament. Mark Farrell scored North Jackson�s lone run in the fifth on a fielders choice and was left stranded at third in the bottom of the seventh. The Royals left 12 men on base and runners in scoring position during four innings but couldn�t come up with the big hit. North Jackson (21-9) won its first game of the tournament but then lost the next three by a combined four runs. MAVERICKS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADERS � The North Medford Maverick bats perked up over the weekend to go undefeated in two doubleheaders. On Friday the Mavericks swept the Grants Pass Gold Miners, 13-3 and 8-6. The Mavericks multiple hitters included Devin Zupan, Joe Morris and Mike Ryder. Saturday�s doubleheader against the Klamath Falls Hawks also proved fruitful as the Mavericks won the first game 16-6 and the second game 21-4. Dustin Butler and Russ Vandell each went 3-for-3 and Mike Ryder went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs to pace Medford. The Mavericks improved their league record to 13-3. Little League Baseball DISTRICT 6 TOURNEY � At LaPine, the Medford Americans continued their winning ways by downing Upper Rogue 11-0 in the 11-12-year-old Little League boys all-star tournament. Jared Adamson only allowed one hit during the four-inning game that was called because of the 10-run mercy rule. Dan Happeny went 2-for-2 with a solo home run while Tommy George also added a solo blast for Medford. Teammate Tyler Heil chipped in with two hits and three RBIs. Medford American (3-0) will face South Suburban (2-0) of Klamath Falls on Tuesday to decide who will advance to Saturday�s championship game. Babe Ruth Baseball MEDFORD 14, PHOENIX/TALENT 3, 6 innings � The 13-year-old Medford Babe Ruth All-Stars advanced to the state tournament in Eugene with a win over Phoenix/Talent in the championship game. Medford broke open a close contest with seven runs in the fourth and closed out the game due to the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth with four more runs. Matt Schmeltzer, Justin Meyers, Mike Barry and Ben Running each had two hits to lead Medford, which batted .427 as a team and 10-runned all three of its opponents in the tournament. The state tournament begins July 26.
