Challengers stun No. 6 Lost River with free throws Girls prep basketball If ever there was a doubt that free-throw shooting can make a huge difference, the Cascade Christian girls basketball team came up with a resounding answer Saturday at Grace Christian School. The ninth-ranked Challengers upended sixth-ranked Lost River in Southern Cascade League action, 58-54, behind a 36-for-45 effort from the charity stripe. "It really wasn't a finesse game at all," Cascade Christian coach Loren King said in the understatement of the night. "They're a very physical, solid team and we just got the whistles down inside tonight." Opting to attack the Raiders in the paint, the Challengers (22-2, 8-2 SCL) rarely got a chance to see their strategy in action thanks to an over-aggressive Lost River squad. "We never got to shoot," King said of his team's 11 field goals on the night compared to 21 by Lost River. Crystal Tait paced the Cascade Christian with 18 points, while Christine McCandless added 17 and Natalie Peck had 13. Hollis Bailey led the charge for Lost River, who King said must have been shell-shocked at the sight of the final stats. "I'm sure they're heading home wondering how a team can shoot that many free throws, but when they pound on you down on the block, it's a little different than if you get a ticky-tack call out front," he said. Lost River dropped to 9-1 in SCL play, but still managed to hold onto the league's No. 1 seed and an automatic state berth. Cascade Christian must win two league playoff games this week in order to face the Raiders again to determine seeding for the state tournament.
