Publisher named to top spot at ONI A longtime publisher has been named as the successor to the top spot at Ottaway Newspapers Inc., the parent company of the Mail Tribune. John N. Wilcox, president and publisher of the Cape Cod Times in Hyannis, Mass., will succeed Joseph Richter as president of Ottaway Newspapers when Richter retires at the end of 2002. Richter became president of ONI in August 1998, having served since 1974 in various executive positions both at the company's newspapers and at its headquarters in Campbell Hall, NY. Jim Ottaway Jr., chairman of ONI and senior vice president of its parent Dow Jones & Company, said, "John Wilcox has done an excellent job with a great staff making the Cape Cod Times one of the best newspapers in New England, and one of the best managed in the Ottaway Newspaper group. "I am confident that his leadership skills, his administrative and organizing talents, and his unusual ability to train, inspire and manage good newspaper people will make John Wilcox very successful as president of our nationwide group of 17 daily and 15 weekly newspapers. Wilcox, 56, has been publisher of the Times since 1996 and had previously served as publisher of two other Ottaway daily newspapers, the Joplin (Mo.) Globe and the Owatonna (Minn.) People's Press, as well as general manager of the News Times in Danbury, Conn. He began his career with Ottaway Newspapers in 1970 as an advertising representative at the Free Press in Mankato, Minn., where he rose to the position of marketing/circulation director. Prior to joining Ottaway he had been editor and publisher of the Lakeville (Minn.) Times, a weekly newspaper. He is a graduate of Minnesota State University and recently completed the advanced executive program at Northwestern University. Peter D. Meyer, general manager of the Cape Cod Times, will become that newspaper's president and publisher.
