Both developed symptoms and tested positive for Zika, whose transmission through sex has been considered rare. Citing privacy concerns, the state declined to identify the patients, who have since recovered, or say in which part of the state they live. They also would not specify the country the man visited or address the pregnancy status of the woman. Most people who get the virus display no symptoms, and those who do generally avoid serious illness. But the virus has been suspected of causing a serious birth defect in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. U.S. health officials have issued guidelines to prevent the sexual transmission of the virus, telling men who have been to outbreak areas to use condoms or abstain from sex with pregnant women. They are investigating more than a dozen possible Zika infections that may have been spread through sex. Mosquito-borne Zika outbreaks have erupted across most of Latin America and the Caribbean in the last year. Pregnant women should try to postpone travel to the regions, said Dr. Richard Leman of the Oregon Health Authority. If they must go, they should use mosquito repellent and sleep under a treated net. "We don't have any proof at this point that this Zika infection during pregnancy is actually responsible for those birth defects, but as a precaution I think it makes sense," he said. The main symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain and red, irritated eyes. Leman said those who display at least two symptoms after returning from an affected country should see a doctor. He stressed there is no evidence of mosquitoes spreading the disease within the state. "The two types of mosquitoes known to carry Zika are not found in Oregon," Leman said.
