Cleanup volunteers needed Volunteers are needed for the fifth annual "Down by the Riverside: Enhancement, Cleanup and Appreciation Day." The cleanup is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at more than 70 parks and facilities around the state. Volunteers will work on projects such as planting, trail repair, bush/blackberry removal, bank side cleanup, illegal dumping cleanup, erosion control and painting. Each site has different activities planned. Some sites encourage boaters, welcome divers, or offer lunch. For a brochure listing all the sites, prospective volunteers can call (800) 322-3326, or check www.solv.org. Last year, more than 2,100 people participated in the annual cleanup, removing almost 135,000 pounds of debris and completing countless restoration projects. "Down by the Riverside" is sponsored by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Port of Portland, Portland Marine Dealers Association, Oregon Lottery, Boyd Coffee Co. and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department with support from Foss Maritime and communications sponsor AT&T Wireless. For more information, call SOLV at (503) 844-9571 or toll-free at (800)322-3326.
