Oregon stumbles out of the gate in pool play loss to Portsmouth By The Associated Press Aug 19, 2006 12:00 AM A A &dateline;SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. & Jordan Bean struck out 14 and pitched a two-hitter, and Billy Hartmann hit a grand slam as Portsmouth, N.H., beat Beaverton 6-1 in the opening game Friday of the Little League World Series. Bean starred on offense, too, drawing a walk that led to a five-run first inning. He tripled to right and scored on a wild pitch in the second for Portsmouth (1-0), the New England region champions. But it's his pitching that draws attention. Bean is so well-known for his strikeouts that New Hampshire fans held up a sign that read "Bean-counter," tallying up each strikeout with a "K." Bean cruised on the mound most of the day, except for the third inning, when Beaverton loaded the bases. Bean struck out Devin DeJardin swinging to escape the jam. After his first-inning walk, Bean scored from first on a Matthew Feeney double. Portsmouth then loaded the bases and Hartmann hit his opposite-field grand slam off losing pitcher DeJardin. Hartmann stomped on home plate with both feet after rounding the bases, and his hit drew cheers of "Let's Go Portsmouth" from fans, including New Hampshire Gov. Mike Lynch. The Murrayhill Little League team from Beaverton (0-1) qualified for the World Series after winning the Northwest region and the Oregon state tournament three weeks ago in Ashland. DeJardin homered to center off Bean in the second for the only run for Beaverton. Keller pitched five-plus innings of scoreless relief, striking out five, after coming in for DeJardin with one out in the top of the first. Lake Charles 1, Columbia 0 The baby-faced boys from Lake Charles, La., are practically grizzled veterans at the Little League World Series. Most of the players from the South Lake Charles Little League team have been together for five or six years. Their goal has been getting to Little League's biggest stage, and they arrived Friday night winning a great game. The Southwest bracket champ defeated Columbia, Mo., 1-0, in an extra-inning game marked by good pitching and timely defense. Gabe Von Rosenberg's deep fly ball to center drove Paul Beglis home from third with the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Louisiana pitchers allowed just one hit. Nick Zaunbrecher struck out Nick de Jong of Midwest-region-winner Columbia (0-1) with a runner on first and two outs to end the game, and players from Lake Charles (1-0) skipped off the diamond in delight. "I was just thinking to hit the ball in the gap the other way," Beglis said about his key hit. Dhahran, Saudi Arabia 5, Surrey, B.C. 0 Matt Timoney and Andrew Holden hit back-to-back solo shots to lead Saudi Arabia (1-0), the Transatlantic region champ. Holden, a pitcher, was locked in a scoreless duel until Timoney broke up Canadian hurler Justin Atkinson's no-hit bid in the fourth by lining a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall. Holden struck out 13, while Atkinson had 15 strikeouts for British Columbia (0-1), which won the Canada bracket.
