Central Point murder case will go to trial in October The case against a San Rafael, Calif., man suspected of shooting to death a Central Point resident in 1999 will go to trial in October. Daniel Taylor Jr., 55, is accused of killing 50-year-old Russell Slack inside Slack's Freeman Road home on Jan. 3, 1999. Court records show that Taylor, who is charged with murder, will be tried Oct. 31. Taylor often uses the alias Ron Earl Wesley. He was arrested by Central Point police March 2 after officers traveled to California armed with a Jackson County warrant. Police located Taylor, a transient, at a homeless shelter near San Francisco. Central Point police allege Taylor used a .22-caliber handgun and shot Slack once in the chest. Slack's dog, Bowser, was shot once in the head but survived. Police said Slack's relatives are caring for the dog. Investigators said drugs may have been a motive in the crime. Slack held on to life for several days while being treated at an area hospital but was unable to communicate effectively with police before he died. Taylor waived extradition proceedings in April and was lodged in the Jackson County Jail without bail in May. He was indicted and later pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
