Casebolt, charged with unlawfully diverting water belonging to the Rogue River Canal company, was tried before the jury in Justice Dox's court this morning and the jury, after a short deliberation, found the defendant guilty. Casebolt's son, who was a witness for his father, on cross examination by the district attorney admitted that he and his father had stated that they would take the canal company's water whenever they felt like it. Casebolt had no water right in the ditch, was receiving a small amount of the water from the company to water his stock as an accommodation. He claimed that he had been authorized by the engineer in charge of the company's water supply to open up the ditch at night and divert the water to his pasture. He was assessed the minimum fine and the costs of the trial. ELECTRIFICATION OF JACKSONVILLE LINE BEGINS AT ONCE S.S. Bullis, head of the Bullis interests in Southern Oregon, returned this morning from a month's business trip in the east and middle west, and announced that the work of electrifying the Jacksonville railroad would begin at once. A consignment of copper wire and bonds were received this morning for this work. Poles are being distributed along the railroad. Two new trolley cars, modern in every respect, will be ordered. it is expected to have the electrification complete and ready for service by the middle of October, which allows for any delay in the receipt of building material. ASHLAND VOTERS REJECT PURCHASE OF LIGHT PLANT ASHLAND, Aug. 26 — The charter amendment proposition, voted upon at a special election yesterday, providing that Ashland take over the equipment of the Oregon-California Power Company within city limits and purchase electric current of the corporation on a wholesale specific basis, was defeated by a vote of 549 to 205. Every one of the three wards voted against it. The result leaves the status of electric light and power in this city as heretofore, with two rival companies occupying the field. The municipal plant, however, is handicapped to the extent of being unable to accept more patronage due to inadequate facilities.
