Roseburg downs Tornado ROSEBURG The inside presence of Joe Newton and the outside shooting of Mike McInerny overcame a stubborn North Medford boys basketball team on Tuesday in a Southern Oregon Conference game. Newton recovered from a six-point first half to finish with 25 and McInerny nailed four 3-point goals, three in the decisive third quarter, to lead Roseburg past the Black Tornado, 70-54. North Medford played its second game without point guard Mike Olson, who broke his hand during practice last week. The Tornado led 25-22 at the half, but was outscored 25-6 in the third period and never recovered. "(The Indians) came out and ran their offense better in the third," said North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh. "We played some very good defense in the first half but they were just on fire in the third." The Indians pounded it in to Newton for eight points down low and, when the Black Tornado collapsed, he found McInerny alone behind the arc. "He (Newton) was very active inside," said Quilhaugh. "We dropped off to help but McInerny kept hitting from the outside." Gabe Burchfiel held his own in the post, with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead North Medford (5-7, 2-1). "For us to be outsized like we were and rebound even with them, thats amazing," said Quilhaugh about the 32-all deadlock on the boards. "Thats something we can build on." Eagle Point (7-6, 2-1 SOC) also tightened up defensively after the break and pretty much limited Ashland to one shot on the offensive end.
