Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 12:15 PM Updated Aug 7, 2015 at 9:56 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Photos from Stouts firefighters » Social News Local report A task force of Jackson County fire districts headed to Douglas County to help protect homes from the Stouts fire, which has grown to 20,804 acres, fire officials said. Fire engines and crews from Jackson County joined another structural protection task force that is stationed near the community of Drew. The two teams, both under the direction of an Oregon State Fire Marshal incident management team, will focus on protecting homes and other buildings in the afternoon and evening when the fire is most active, officials reported. Overnight Thursday, flames flared up on the east side of the fire, burning actively until 3 a.m. Friday. Crews were able to keep the fire within the hand-dug lines south of the 3220 Road and west of Tiller-Trail Highway, Friday's fire update said. Activity on the rest of the fire was relatively calm from Thursday into Friday, officials said. Mop-up continued along the north and west flanks. Fireline construction also continued along the lower portion of the west flank, the south flank and portions of the east flank. Crews are employing bulldozers, excavators and log-harvesting machines called feller-bunchers to build a fireline and remove trees and brush adjacent to the line. On slopes too steep for heavy equipment to work, crews are building fireline by hand, officials reported. There are now 1,545 people working on the fire, which was 25 percent contained at midday Friday. The cost of suppression so far is $10.4 million, officials said. Air quality in Medford improved to good by 8 p.m. Friday, but registered as "moderate" for the 24-hour period ending at that time. Shady Cove's air was listed as unhealthy for the 24-period, but by 8 p.m. had improved to "moderate". All other sites in the Rogue Valley were listed as "good."
