The black 1986 Camaro careened into a guardrail after the tires were punctured, causing minor injuries to the driver, 19-year-old Gary Taylor, and his brother, 23-year-old passenger Christopher Taylor, according to police. Gary Taylor was lodged later Monday at the Jackson County Jail on charges of attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, endangering the welfare of another person, second-degree assault, and first-degree criminal mischief, jail records indicate. George Taylor was being held without bail in the fugitive warrant, which is includes allegations of driving under the influence of intoxicants, driving while suspended and impersonation, jail records show. Christopher Taylor was lodged in the jail on a Shady Cove municipal court warrant alleging driving while suspended, according to jail records. He was being held Monday in lieu of $6,750 bail. When the two people in the car noticed the deputy, they both hunched over an apparent attempt to hide their faces, Countryman said. The deputy followed the car as it committed a string of minor traffic infractions before heading northbound onto I-5 from Exit 35 at Blackwell Road, Countryman said. Near milepost 36, the deputy attempted to pull the car over, but the Camaro sped away when the deputy turned on the patrol car’s overhead lights, Countryman said. The car sped at one point as fast as 85 mph, with the deputy lagging back at a lower speed, Countryman said. When the Camaro approached heavy traffic, however, it slowed down, Countryman said. Another deputy attempted to place spike strips in the slow lane near milepost 48, but the car sped around them, he said. Oregon State Police and Josephine County sheriff’s deputies joined in after the car sped into Josephine County. Officers placed a second set of strips near milepost 55 at Grants Pass, Countryman said. The car hit the strip, crashing into a nearby guardrail, Countryman said. No other non-police cars were in the area when the strips were deployed, he said. Gary Taylor was taken by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, where he was treated and released to police custody, a hospital nursing supervisor said. Christopher Taylor was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, where he was treated and released to police custody, an RVMC nursing supervisor said.
