OSP said in a news release after the May 29 shooting that Box was armed with a handgun when he was shot on Fir Canyon Road, near Wilderville west of Grants Pass. The two responding OSP troopers, Heather West and Gregor Smyth, were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. No additional details about what provoked the shooting, or how many shots were fired by whom, have been released since then. OSP did say that the response by OSP to the home was precipitated by an altercation between Box and his 23-year-old daughter Kelsey, who called 911. Lt. William Fugate of Oregon State Police said Thursday he didn't know whether the investigation by a multi-agency team headed by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety is finished. "I don't have any updates," Fugate said. "If I did, the District Attorney's Office is the keeper of the information." After the shooting, Fugate said a handgun allegedly in Box's possession and the guns of the troopers would be analyzed. Josephine County District Attorney Ryan Mulkins said earlier this week via email that an autopsy has been completed, and that he was "expecting reports soon." "Once received I will begin the review process," Mulkins wrote. Bernadette Box, widow of Robert Box, said her attorney has advised her to not comment. Robert Box drove a loader for a local logging company and built a specialized truck driven on the regional Tuff Truck circuit by his daughter Kelsey, who was paralyzed from the waist down in a car crash two years ago. The shooting was the second officer-involved fatality in the past year in Josephine County. In September, a man was shot and killed in a standoff with Grants Pass police on Blossom Drive, which was the first fatal shooting in the line of duty involving the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety that anyone could remember. The District Attorney's Office later found officers were justified in fatally shooting 29-year-old Daniel Diaz during the standoff. The troopers involved in the Box shooting are both eight-year veterans. West, 41, joined OSP in 2007 and works out of the Grants Pass patrol office. Smyth, 46, also joined OSP in 2007 and is based at the Central Point patrol office. The disturbance call was handled by OSP and not sheriff's deputies, because the Sheriff's Office cannot provide 24-hour patrol coverage due to budget cuts.
